Photographs of Dilston Castle
Dilston Castle stands on an ancient site, the recorded history of which dates back to the 12 century.
|
Dilston Castle is a fortified tower house, built c1417, when Border warfare made raiding a constant threat. On the ground floor
are two barrel-vaulted chambers with gun-loops of a type uncommon in the north of England.
|
Leading off from the larger chamber is a cell that once functioned as a prison. The tower house replaced an earlier castle or manor
house belonging to the Lords of Dyvelston, the relics of which can be located in the present ruin.
